Marriage Advice Printable

When Kevin and I got married we received an 8x10 framed copy of a "Recipe for 'A Happy Marriage." After my Seinfeld post last week I was reminded of that recipe (which we have hanging in our kitchen) and decided to re-vamp and share it. I've actually seen several other versions of this same idea but I think it bears repeating.

This printable is formatted for a 4x6 card. You can try printing it larger but the quality won't be as good.

Seinfeldian Thoughts on Marriage

I heard a great talk at church a few weeks ago about marriage and things we can do to make it better. General kindness is a good one, communication is great, too. Sitting in the chapel, listening to this talk, I was reminded of Jerry Seinfeld. Might sound strange but Seinfeld has some of the best advice on marriage I've ever heard.

"Don't be such a good accountant."

I'm pretty sure the first place I heard him say this was over a year ago on an Oprah episode they did about Seinfeld's (then upcoming) show The Marriage Ref. Here's a link to the Oprah.com article about that episode. They mention this particular quote on page 10. He's talking to a woman whose husband "never" changes the toilet paper roll and he's basically telling her to chill. Don't count the number of times your spouse takes out the trash compared to the number of times you do. That's not helping anything.

Great advice. When it comes to little things like putting the empty ice cream container back in the freezer, is it really the end of the world? I know if I do something like that I'm not trying to annoy Kevin and I know the reverse is true and he's not trying to annoy me. So why should I try to make him feel bad about something that doesn't really add up to much in the long run? Is it worth picking a fight with your spouse when you could just as easily choose to get over it?

I'm obviously not a perfect wife but this is something I try to work on. I'm glad I have Seinfeld's voice in my head helping me be a better person. :-)

I can do that!

If you haven't seen this site, you should check it out. It's inspired me to look at things I like with a slightly different eye. Not, I could make that at home, but I will make that at home.

Do not adjust your TVs...

Er...computers...I promise your browser is fine I really am just using the basic blogger background for the time being. I'm looking to get even more into/out of this blog and I want it to be fabulous and reader friendly. I noticed my iPad 2 browser didn't like to show my old background so I'm working on my own layout. If you have an opinion on what you think makes for a great reader experience please share in the comments below. In semi-related news, be sure to check out my new amazon widget in the sidebar - a few of my favorite things for your inspired browsing pleasure. I've also updated the Saving Mullah page with something I would definitely recommend exploring.

Lots more free printables coming your way! I love free!

Father's Day Ties

I wanted to share this post from my family updates blog. For Christmas I made Kevin's dad and my dad ties with their grandkids hand prints ironed on them. I used this pattern from Purl Bee and followed the instructions for making a wider tie. I actually added more than the 3/8 inch that they said, but I'm not even sure of the exact measurements because I basically just guessed.

This is what the front of my dad's tie looked like.
*Edit* - Before I just had the digital file I printed on the transfer paper but I called my sister and had her take a picture of the actual tie so I could swap it out - TaDa!

I got my kids' hand prints (a two person job for the 5 month old, mind you) using Crayola Washable Kids Paint. I let the paint dry and then I scanned them into the computer. I had my sister do the same with her son and then email me the file. Then I threw them all on a page in Photoshop and changed them to black and white and upped the contrast a little. (You could make the hands any color you want but as you can see the fabric I had was bright blue and black was the only thing that looked right with it.)  I measured the tie and worked up the layout I wanted. I rotated the whole image diagonally so it could fit on one sheet of transfer paper. In the end though, I didn't like the way the extra iron-on material looked around the hand prints so I cut them apart and trimmed each one separately as close as I could, so setting up the layout for the printing part didn't really matter. Kevin's dad's tie had 6 hand prints on it so I sized the hands down just a smidge to get them to actually fit on the tie. I did them all proportionally, though, so they still looked right lined up together.

For the Iron-On part I used HP Iron-On Transfers and just followed the package instructions. I used Transfers for "light fabrics" for all the black and white stuff, the only thing I used Transfers for "dark fabrics" for was the flower on Bill's tie (check my original post to see what I'm talking about.)

The ties weren't hard to make, even with all my do-overs. So check out my post and Purl Bee's pattern and whip one up for an awesome Fathers' Day gift.

Leave me a comment if you have any questions!

Cake!

A couple Sundays ago I volunteered to bring a sheet cake to the Missionary Zone Conference to be held Friday the 13th at noon. After my minor cupcake success of early May 2011, I thought for sure I could pull off making the cake from scratch. Well, to make a long story short, the missionaries received cupcakes from Publix instead.

I got halfway through the recipe, I'd even already separated the egg whites and had my other main ingredients sitting in their bowls. Then I realized that I really wasn't halfway through the recipe. I still needed to beat the egg whites and fold in gently and about 50 other things stood between me and getting this cake to the church on time. 11:05am + who knows how long to finish the batter + 35 minutes (at least) for cake to bake + 15 minute drive time + cake due at the church by 11:30am = stop trying to make this work and go buy something else to bring! I shoved the perishable ingredients back in the fridge and went to Publix for the second time in a 1 hour period. Hence the cupcakes. I'm sure they enjoyed them, I didn't hang around long enough to find out.

But as I said, I already had the batter in the works and I didn't want to waste any of the ingredients. So when I got home later that night (after various additional errands and outings), I pulled those egg whites back out of the fridge and finished my little project.

Recipes:
Frosting:

Cake:

I took my time and followed the recipes exactly and it turned out pretty well. As you can see it's just a basic white cake with chocolate frosting so nothing fabulous but, as Kevin so astutely put it, I "didn't mess it up." I'm definitely getting better at this. What should I try next?

Happy {Early} Birthday to ME!

My birthday isn't the 21st but we kind of ended up celebrating over this past weekend instead. Being born in May generally means that when you become a mom your birthday and Mothers' Day will kind of blend together and make it a sort of whole month long thing. At least that's how it works in our house. This month things got especially jostled around because my hubby went down to Alabama to help with the disaster clean up on the 6th and 7th so his plans for spoiling me on Mothers' Day weekend went down the tubes. He got me flowers before he left and told me we'd move Mothers' Day to the next weekend.

So I had my Mother's Day on Saturday (the 14th). Kevin had gotten me a gift certificate to the nail salon down the street so I went and got a manicure and pedicure. The lady doing my feet sold me on an upgrade to a spa pedicure and it was soooo worth the 12 extra bucks. Foot scrub, leg wraps, hot stone massage, awesome. That was my morning and then we went to our niece's 3rd birthday party at the grandparents' house. In the end it also became phase one of my birthday because I found out what my birthday present from Kevin was.

That's right! iPad 2 baby!

Kevin decided to go ahead and give it to me since the surprise part was over. He'd left it at work though so I had to wait until that evening when we could drive over there and get it.

I've been telling Kevin I wanted to get an iPad for Alexander so he can use all the educational apps to help him learn to communicate. A friend of mine had shown me hers and let Alexander do The Monster at the End of this Book and he absolutely loved it! I really hadn't looked into too much as far as what I could do with it but I'm learning quickly that it rocks!

But wait, there's more! To add to the "it's my birthday" feel of the day, I got my piano too! I've been searching and searching on craigslist trying to find a piano someone was giving away for free (people do that all the time, they just want someone pick it up and take it off their hands). I hadn't had any real luck though. But then last week Brenda told me she'd offered the "piano in the basement" to Kevin's sisters and neither one wanted it. She wanted to know if I would like to have it. Heck yeah! So after the party, Kevin and his dad and brothers loaded it into their truck and brought it on over.
In our house
The piano isn't in tune and it would probably need some things fixed first to even make it "tunable." All the keys work though and I can use it the way it is for now. Happy day!

Of course all of this means we're not going to be doing much on my actual birthday but it's all good. If I could have an early birthday like this every year I'd definitely be down. Now to find apps and sheet music...woohoo!

Organization Efforts

I want to be like this lady when I "grow up."

I really want to start this 52 weeks of organizing thing but I haven't been organized enough to do it yet. :-) As I've said before, I actually like organizing, I just don't like cleaning. The day to day "picking up" is just no fun. Occasionally I'll get in a groove and go on a cleaning spree, but it's never really done is it? There will always be laundry and dishes and toys that aren't put away. But then there's the stuff that has no place to be put away. I think that if all these things actually had a home, it wouldn't bug me so much.
Lately I've been obsessed with getting a storage ottoman (or two). My husband and I are looking at new furniture sets for our living room and every time we see an ottoman I'm like "is it a storage ottoman?" Kevin has started to laugh at me even before the words come out of my mouth because he knows they're coming. Regardless however, I've decided something, I don't need "a place for everything, and everything in its place", I just want the first part. When things are just floating around homeless in my house I feel a strong desire to throw them in the trash. And since Kevin doesn't like just throwing things away (I think it's a "man thing"...or maybe a sane thing, I dunno) I figure the answer is more places for those things to hide.

That's right random homeless junk, flee before me! You can run and you'd better hide! Fear my wrath and rejoice in my mercy in giving you a probation.

What I'm doing today

Today I'm making phone calls. Lots of phone calls. To people who don't know me. Who possibly don't actually care about me but it's their job to answer the phone. A blog post by a friend of mine explains why I am making these phone calls.

A few thoughts on denial and special needs parents.

Read that post (and know she's right) and then look at this face:
Kid-I-Would-Do-ANYTHING-For
Now, how could I not be making phone calls today?

I baked again...

I made these cupcakes again yesterday to take to my in-laws mothers' day dinner. I ran out of time so I ended up bringing the icing bowl with me and frosted them there. In all the rush I also forgot to grab the filling out of the fridge. So they were fillingless and without cookies on top (my son finished the mini cookies off days ago) but the point of this post is they were still a hit. Kevin even said he liked them better the second time around. I'm feeling better and better about my baking skills as I practice on this recipe. Probably doesn't hurt that I get to eat the icing as I go. That is some good icing, let me tell ya. You should make some, you know you want to...

Mothers' Day Song

My husband has a long time good friend who, every Mothers' Day since I met him 5 years ago, never fails to mention his frustration at the hymns chosen for church that day.

It's not that he dislikes the songs that are chosen, he just gets a little irritated that one particular song is not chosen.

I think that most likely the title itself takes it out of the running for any chorister who maybe doesn't know the lyrics. However, he firmly believes there is no better song to sing on Mothers' Day because it is the one and only hymn that mentions Heavenly Mother.

So, to perhaps put his mind at ease (probably not though) for this one Mothers' Day, the hymn -

O My Father

O my Father, thou that dwellest
In the high and glorious place,
When shall I regain thy presence
And again behold thy face?
In thy holy habitation,
Did my spirit once reside?
In my first primeval childhood
Was I nurtured near thy side?

For a wise and glorious purpose
Thou hast placed me here on earth
And withheld the recollection
Of my former friends and birth;
Yet ofttimes a secret something
Whispered, "You're a stranger here,"
And I felt that I had wandered
From a more exalted sphere.

I had learned to call thee Father,
Thru thy Spirit from on high,
But, until the key of knowledge
Was restored, I knew not why.
In the heav'ns are parents single?
No, the thought makes reason stare!
Truth is reason; truth eternal
Tells me I've a mother there.

When I leave this frail existence,
When I lay this mortal by,
Father, Mother, may I meet you
In your royal courts on high?
Then, at length, when I've completed
All you sent me forth to do,
With your mutual approbation
Let me come and dwell with you.

In Honor of Mother's Day

(I couldn't find a title or an author for this, it's been going around the web for years. If you know for sure who wrote it let me know, I'd love to give them credit.)

Untitled
Author Unknown

We are sitting at lunch one day when my daughter casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of "starting a family. "We're taking a survey," she says half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?"

"It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral.

"I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations."

But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my daughter, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable.

I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking, "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub. That an urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop a soufflé or her best crystal without a moments hesitation.

I feel that I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for child care, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right. I want my daughter to know that every day decisions will no longer be routine.

That a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at McDonald's will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of Independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.

However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.

Looking at my attractive daughter, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself.

That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give herself up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years, not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs.

I want her to know that a ceasarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honour.

My daughter's relationship with her husband will change, but not in the way she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic.

I wish my daughter could sense the bond she will feel with women throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving.

I want to describe to my daughter the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time.

I want her to taste the joy that is so real it actually hurts.

My daughter's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes.

"You'll never regret it," I finally say.

Then I reached across the table, squeezed my daughter's hand and offered a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings. The blessed gift of God - and that of being a Mother.

P.S. Yes, Kevin, I fall in love with you every time you reach for the baby powder. (So I love you a lot.) ~Amy

I baked today...

My facebook feed "fed" me this utterly drool worthy recipe from TidyMom yesterday morning.

I never randomly choose to bake (it's got to be Kevin's birthday or something) but I knew I had to taste these cupcakes. Which means I would have to make them. I later realized that one of my visiting teach-ees DOES have a birthday today. Yay for random inclinations that leave me with awesome things to share.

(Happy Birthday J! These are coming your way!)

The recipe calls for 6 and half sticks of butter and has a filling that includes sweetened condensed milk. Rich rich rich. So I went ahead and halfed the recipe for the cupcakes themselves, that way I'd end up with just 12 instead of 24. Since I didn't half the filling and icing recipes, I have leftovers of those but I can keep them in the fridge or freezer and use them with fresh cupcakes another day. Other than that I followed the directions exactly. Just pop on over to TidyMom for the must have recipe (and maybe tell her I sent you.)

My first attempts at icing. I tried to get fancy. (Fail.)

Still not professional grade but better yeah?

Kevin came home and liked but didn't completely love his cupcake. We have somewhat different tastes in food (and various other things in life). You'll definitely need a glass of milk close at hand to combat that richness we were talking about. Yummy yummy yum yum! I'm so glad I decided to bake today!

Alternate Software

One of my readers asked if the DIY tissue paper photo canvas could be done with different software than the ones I listed.

Absolutely it can!

One example of a good (free) downloadable software is GIMP. That's actually what the original tutorial author used, I just like what I already have. I've never used GIMP myself but I've heard good reviews about it and I figure you can't beat free.

I'd love to see the canvases you all are doing! Please leave me a link if you do a blog post about it and I'll be sure to check it out!
